NSD Electric Achieves First Overseas Breakthrough in Large-Capacity Variable-Speed Pumped Storage with Wawa Project in the Philippines

Wawa Pumped Storage Hydropower Project in the Philippines, featuring dam infrastructure and reservoir for variable-speed pumped storage development.

NSD Electric has successfully secured the contract to supply governor systems and key control equipment for the Wawa Pumped Storage Hydropower Project in the Philippines. This milestone marks a major breakthrough for NSD Electric in the international pumped storage market and represents an important step forward for Chinese-developed core control technologies in overseas large-capacity variable-speed pumped storage applications.

Located in Rizal Province, the Philippines, the Wawa Pumped Storage Hydropower Project is a strategic energy infrastructure project designed to enhance grid flexibility, support peak-load regulation, and promote the integration of renewable energy into the local power system. The project is planned with two 300 MW variable-speed pumped storage units, providing a total installed capacity of 600 MW and large-scale daily energy storage capability. Public project information shows that Wawa is expected to play a significant role in improving the stability and responsiveness of the Luzon power grid.

For this project, NSD Electric will exclusively supply the complete governor system and inlet valve control system. The scope includes advanced control technologies specifically developed for variable-speed pumped storage units, as well as a 16 MPa high-pressure hydraulic oil system. Both solutions represent important technical achievements in China’s pumped storage control equipment sector and mark a pioneering overseas application of such technologies.

Variable-speed pumped storage units operate under highly complex conditions, with frequent transitions between pumping, generating, and grid regulation modes. These operating characteristics place extremely high demands on governor performance, hydraulic stability, dynamic response, and long-term equipment reliability. To meet these requirements, NSD Electric’s engineering team has developed dedicated control strategies and system configurations for variable-speed operation.

The self-developed 16 MPa high-pressure hydraulic system is designed to improve response speed, control stability, and operational reliability under frequent mode changes. Combined with NSD Electric’s intelligent governor control algorithms, the system enables fast and precise regulation across a wide speed range, supporting millisecond-level dynamic response and helping the plant deliver enhanced frequency regulation and peak-shaving performance.

The successful signing of the Wawa project reflects strong recognition of NSD Electric’s technical strength, system integration capability, and engineering experience in high-pressure hydraulic control and intelligent regulation for pumped storage units. It also establishes a benchmark case for Chinese high-end hydropower control equipment entering the global advanced energy storage market.

As pumped storage continues to play a critical role in renewable energy integration and power system flexibility, NSD Electric will continue to focus on technological innovation, product reliability, and international engineering excellence. With independently developed core technologies and high-quality solutions, NSD Electric remains committed to supporting the development of modern energy infrastructure worldwide.
